What Reason Would I Need To Learn C

The C programming language was initially created for and actualized by Dennis Ritchie on the UNIX operating system. The C language, which is very basic, isn't attached to specific hardware or framework. This makes it simpler for a client to compose programs that will run without many (or any) progressions on essentially all machines.

The C language is frequently called a middle-level computer language as it consolidates the components of high-level languages with the functionalism of assembly language. C programming permits the control of bits, bytes, and addresses—giving the programmer more command over precisely how the program will act and more straightforward admittance to the mechanics of the fundamental hardware.

C was made, impacted, and field-tried by working programmers. The outcome is that C gives the programmer what the programmer needs.

C is as yet one of the most famous programming languages out there. The linguistic structure and ideas of C, particularly, has stood the trial of time, and you can see them being carried on to other mainstream programming languages, even the advanced ones, for example, Go.

Regardless of whether you will design web applications or extravagant web front-end segments for the remainder of your life, learning C will assist you with seeing how software and hardware really cooperate.

risk management and mitigation

The primary goal of any IT security organization is risk management and mitigation. But understanding risks can be complicated: Is a newly discovered vulnerability a risk for your particular company? Should you pay attention to the news about state-backed APT groups like Lazarus?

The key is to match IT security risk management to the overall business risk management in your organization. Defense or financial organizations usually have a mature and established risk management strategy, sometimes with a dedicated role of Chief Risk Officer; if your organization has someone in that position, that’s who you want to learn from. But every organization is constantly making decisions about risk. Often, this responsibility falls to the CFO and the CEO. I believe you should seek their advice to build an aligned and consistent risk management strategy for the organization. Failing to do so creates additional work and can leave the organization exposed to real threats that IT overlooked due to lack of business involvement.

This brings us back to the challenge that I started with: How do you measure risk and expected savings? I won’t even try to unpack it all in one post; there are long books on the subject (here’s a good one: “How to Measure Anything in Cybersecurity Risk” by Douglas W. Hubbard and Richard Seiersen).

Top Learnings from Azure Security

Like the other Cloud platforms, Microsoft Azure is also entirely dependent on a technology called Virtualization, which emulates computer hardware in Software. This is made feasible by the evidence that a maximum number of the computer hardware operates by obeying an encoded set of instructions. Virtualized hardware can use Software to function like real hardware by mapping these software instructions.

Cloud providers manage a huge number of data centers, each having a massive number of physical servers that execute virtualized hardware. It flows on a large group of servers and networking hardware. It, in return, hosts a complex collection of applications that control the operation and configuration of the Software and virtualized hardware on these servers. This complex orchestration is what makes Azure so ground-breaking. It makes sure that users no longer have to invest their time maintaining and upgrading computer hardware, as Azure will deal with it.

Microsoft Azure is an actively expanding and second-largest cloud computing platform currently in the market. Along with this, it is an online portal that allows us to access and manage Microsoft’s resources and services. It offers a host of services on different domains such as Compute, Database, Content Delivery, and Networking. It can host your existing application and also provide the development of a new application.

It also allows you to enhance the on-premises applications. In Azure, the customer can easily scale up and scale down the application as per the fluctuation in demands. Microsoft Azure is used by more than 80% of the fortune 500 companies. Cloud providers own extensive data centers with numbers of servers, storage systems, and severe components critical to an organization’s work, so its security is significant.

Average salary of a system administrator

The states with higher salaries are generally those with higher economic activity — they are home to Fortune 500 companies or provide a wide range of opportunities for businesses. Examples include Maryland, New York and California.

Note that Washington DC would make it into this list if it were a state, since it boasts an average annual salary of $99,953.

It’s important to note that salary can vary dramatically within a given state. California is a good example: the average salary ranges from $109,998 in San Francisco, to $97,130 in Los Angeles, to $82,745 in San Diego. Similarly, in Texas, which ranked #11 overall, salaries range from $70,640 in Dallas up to $135,000 in Houston.

At the other end of the spectrum are many states in the South, Midwest and the Rust Belt, where the average salary for system administrator is much lower due to poor economic growth, industry crises, and a dependence on agriculture instead of manufacturing and business. The only exception in the Midwest is Illinois; its average salary of $85,313 nearly puts the state into the top 10.

Of course, one reason salaries are higher in certain locations is that the cost of living is higher. To get a better measure of how far your salary will actually go, we looked into how rent varies by state (using Zillow.com). By dividing the average rent divided by the average sysadmin salary for each state, a different picture emerges of the best places to live from an economic perspective

stormy day in the IT department.

I manage the on-site school databases for all things student related. Skyward, Pearson Access Next, ACT — if it’s educational and technological in any way shape or form, chances are it will land smack dab in my lap.

It was the start of a new school year and things looked bleak. I’d spent the previous days in Zoom and Webex meetings, prepping for how to do testing in the time of Covid. I’d barely taken a sip of my first cup of coffee when an email crossed my path.

“All student information must be entered in PearsonAccessNext for the fall EOC testing by September 25th or DOOM SHALL BEFALL THEE.”

I looked at my calendar. It was the 18th. A week? “No problem,” I thought, forgetting that thinking such a thing usually leads to disaster and unmitigated horrors you wouldn’t wish upon your worst enemy.

I had to create the student profiles by hand in Pearson from the student profiles in the Skyward database, a time-consuming, mind-numbing task, but I had coffee and a will to power through so that it wouldn’t be waiting for me on Monday morning.

I got to work. Typing and double-checking every state ID number and birthdate as I went, the hours flew by. Everything seemed to be going fine.

Choosing the Right Solutions

Authentication — In any cloud platform it’s important to implement a zero trust model and ensure each request to access your IT ecosystem is properly authorized. Multi-factor authentication (MFA) adds a layer of security by requiring two forms of identification, often a password and a code from a physical token or phone. Single sign-on reduces the need for repeated authentication and multiple passwords, simplifying access for users.
Activity monitoring — Closely monitoring user activity is essential to threat detection. User behavior analytics can help you spot unusual activity across your cloud or hybrid environment promptly.
Cloud access security broker (CASB) — A CASB is a software solution that sits between the users of a cloud service and the cloud applications, monitoring activity and enforcing your security policies across workloads.
Penetration testing — Pen testing analyzes your infrastructure from the viewpoint of a malicious It is particularly helpful for detection of misconfiguration and access management issues.
Software composition — Gather insight on the open-source applications in your network.
Change and configuration auditing — Monitoring all changes that could affect who can use particular applications and what those applications can access is also critical to security.

Microsoft 365 Guest Users

With its flagship productivity suite Microsoft 365 (formerly known as Office 365), Microsoft aims to break down the traditional business silos that inhibit content sharing and collaboration. The interwoven capabilities of SharePoint Online and OneDrive for Business allow users to collaborate with a wide range of colleagues from both inside and outside their organization.

Despite its benefits, file sharing poses several risks. What if your files are inadvertently or deliberately shared with the wrong users? What if users mishandle sensitive information? How can you stay in control of your guest users?

To mitigate security concerns around sharing, it’s important to understand how to configure the two mechanisms of sharing in Microsoft 365:
Guest access: Sharing content with guest members in Microsoft 365 groups or Microsoft Teams
External sharing: Sharing links to specific SharePoint and OneDrive assets with external parties

This article explains how to manage guest users and external access in Microsoft 365 to ensure business continuity without compromising the security of your critical data:

Time for Digital Transformation

“I applied to every Chick-Fil-A in Texas, which is where I was living at the time, but no store was hiring,” Clark said. “Finally, I was offered a position at a mall unit in Iowa that offered a leadership program to high-achieving employees. I jumped on that opportunity, and it changed my life.”

Working for Chick-Fil-A, Clark began learning the lessons that would eventually help him get into IT and make a lasting career change, although that wasn’t on his radar at the time. He was assigned a mentor who taught him that if he was coachable, hungry for what he wanted and had a whatever-it-takes attitude, he could achieve anything. He thrived at the Iowa store and was accepted into the leadership program in just 3 weeks – a feat which usually takes 3 to 6 months.

“I thought I was just going to be a kitchen manager, but I couldn’t get cybersecurity off of my mind,” Clark explained. “I didn’t have a degree in computer science, so I thought IT wasn't an option for me. Nevertheless, I went to my mentor and admitted my strong desire to work in IT. He encouraged me to go for it.”

Clark genuinely loved working for Chick-Fil-A and set his sights on an IT position at the company’s corporate headquarters in December 2019. The requirements were either a bachelor's degree or 2 years of Chick-Fil-A leadership experience along with 1 year of IT troubleshooting experience.

Understanding Network Data Delivery

The Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model is a series of layers through which computer systems use to communicate. There are seven layers, and the networking layer would be layer 3. The network layer is responsible for packet forwarding, including routing through intermediate routers. However, when it comes to understanding network data delivery, we need to get through layer 2 before we can move on to layer 3.

The data link layer, or layer 2, is the protocol layer that transfers data between nodes on a network segment across the physical layer, or what is commonly known as a host’s physical address. Layer 2 is divided into two parts, consisting of the MAC and data link sublayers, detailing addressing and the layout of data frames, and Layer 3 includes a host’s logical address. Let’s take a closer look at how these layers work together to ensure a delicious flow of data.

Before we dig deep into layers 2 and 3, let’s start with a little bit of background on the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model. The OSI model was developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). It describes the layers that computer systems use to communicate over a network and was the first standard model for network communications adopted by all major computer and telecommunication companies in the early 1980s.

Storage Networking Industry Association

Certain vendor-neutral storage certifications are provided by the Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA). Many vendor-specific storage certifications are available from vendors that offer storage systems and solutions which are: Cisco, IBM (BCS), HP (H3C), Hitachi Data Systems (HDS), Symantec, Oracle and many more.

Usually in the world of IT certification a vendor neutral certification would weigh more on your resume and experience as it offers a first-rate entry point in the field sought. On the other hand a vendor specific may be helpful as long as you are with your current employer providing the certification.

With CompTIA and SNIA being partners on the Storage+ qualification, a high-quality entry-point level storage certification in this area can emerge sooner or later.

A very high probability exists for a high-grade entry point level storage certification with the partnership of CompTIA with SNIA in this zone.

The exam is for 90 minutes and the candidate is required to answer 100 questions. A score of 720 is required to pass the exam. Candidates who attempt this exam are recommended to have 12 months of hands-on technical storage experience

comptia Building your study plan

We understand the fact that everyone learns at a different pace, and no study material can be practically admissible to all the students or candidates of the course. That is why you need to customize a lot of things and study material, in this case, to make it according to your palate. There are books, online study material, videos, and practice sessions available on the internet, some of them are paid while some of these are available free of cost.

Although you need to make sure that whatever study material or elements you are using for preparation of this exam cover the basic principles or objectives of the Security+ examination, also make sure that it provides you with dedicated knowledge to master the respective skills.

After you have planned to pursue the rest of your preparation with one particular study material at hand, you should move onto taking practice tests, which will essentially calculate your progress. These practice tests evaluate you on multiple levels, such as identifying your weaknesses and the topics you have earned command on. If you are not satisfied with your particular study material as you will find out anyway in your practice exam test, then it is advised that you cage the course of studies ultimately and shift towards a more subtle or applicable course of study.

You will get through just fine if you commit to providing a weekly 3-4 hours consistent study time to master all the skills required to pass the examination.

Reasons Alternative Education

On test day, get a good night’s sleep, eat a good meal before taking the test, arrive a few minutes early, and go in with a positive attitude. You will want to schedule both sections of the exams back to back on the same day. Be confident in your first “gut reaction” to the questions, and try and eliminate possible answers through process of elimination. By narrowing down the choices, you can focus on the remaining choices to help select the best answer.
For those looking to shake things up in the job market, especially pursuing medical jobs, earning an associate or bachelor’s degree may be the first education path that comes to mind. But, alternative education options like online career training are often a wiser choice.
Many of the medical jobs on the market today don’t require higher degrees. Instead, they prioritize hyper-focused job training and certification. That’s why online education often provides a faster, more affordable route to entering the medical field and many other growing industries in the United States.

It’s not a fad. Alternative education is here to stay. Here’s three big reasons why.
TL;DR

Don’t have time to read the whole piece? No problem. Check out our key thoughts below:

Trade schools and online career training providers are much more affordable than any college tuition.
Online career training offers unbelievable flexibility that doesn’t require you to live on campus, take additional credits, or meet daily attendance.
Anyone — regardless of circumstances or lifestyle — can receive a cutting-edge certification with affordable and flexible career training options.

Why Should You Consider Hiring a CISO-as-a-Service?

There are many options for CISO-as-a-Service for businesses. However, they aren’t necessarily equal in their capabilities, experience, or breadth of services. Some providers also treat the service as one-size-fits-all, and that’s not in anyone’s best interest. Every company is unique and has its own sets of risks and challenges. To best compare the offerings, ask the right questions.
1. Do they have experience in your industry and the compliance regulations specific to it?

Highly regulated industries, such as healthcare and finance, have specific needs when it comes to CISOs and cybersecurity. There are laws and regulations to which you must adhere. If that applies to your business, it’s imperative to ask about their past experience with these compliance measures. Without specific experience, you may find the provider hitting a learning curve, which could cause delays and exposure to risk.
2. Do they have audit experience?

On day one, the CISO-as-a-Service should perform audits to understand where your cybersecurity is and where it needs to go. These are fundamental activities, but this doesn’t mean every provider offers them or has experience with them.

Secure File Storage and Sharing

The alternative is to focus on device security. There’s no way to control the Wi-Fi at each employee’s house. The better approach is to develop security infrastructures that support devices with MDM (mobile device management) solutions. IT can then have visibility at the device level and enforce multi-factor authentication, update malware programs, and install software patches.

If your organization isn’t using a secure cloud-based solution for storage and sharing of files, it will be hard for them to work together. There are many options, and companies big and small often just use Google Drive.

However, there are lots of downsides to using such a platform. You don’t own it or control it, so it’s hard to manage the security aspect. Instead, find a solution that not only provides accessibility to employees no matter where they are but also has layers of cybersecurity protections so that you can have peace of mind that your business and customer data is safe.

NIST Cybersecurity Framework

Best practices related to cybersecurity for your business correlate with the NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) Cybersecurity Framework. This includes:
Identify assets at risk
Protect those assets
Detect when a security issue arises
Respond to this attack with mitigation efforts
Recover assets in the case of a breach
Cybersecurity Best Practices
1. Conduct Regular Penetration Testing

Your network is only secure as your defenses are. Maybe you carried out pen-testing a few years ago and think that’s sufficient. However, the cybersecurity landscape changes almost every day. Cybercriminals get smarter and more able to crack into networks, so that means you’ve got to reexamine your defenses and vulnerabilities.

With ethical hacking or pen-testing, you imitate an actual hack to see how your network will hold up. If you want to know how cybercriminals can get to you, pen-testing is a must to practice on at least an annual basis.

Linux on AWS: The Operating Systems

The Linux on AWS offering is quite robust. Many of the major distributions can be easily deployed as AMIs (Amazon Machine Images). There are many combinations of operating systems and configurations to choose from. Here we’ll help you sort through the basics.

Before we dive into the different operating systems, it’s useful to understand the concept of a “hardened” image. For many of the operating systems we’ll mention below, you’ll find hardened images available. What this means is the images have been configured to meet a certain set of criteria.

For example, the RogueWave enhanced support for CentOS – CentOS 7 Security Hardened image is a CentOS 7 image configured by Rouge Wave Software to meet Center for Internet Security (CIS) and OpenSCAP standards.

These “out-of-box” hardened images are useful if you’re looking to streamline your workload. However, if you’re looking for something to practice with and configure from scratch, you may want a more bare-bones minimal install.

Communication Steps of an Incident Response Plan

The incident response plan should include a structure of who needs to know about a possible security breach. The front-line responder needs to know who to tell first and what to do next while the responding manager takes charge of communicating with the rest of the employees and marketing communicates with customers, shareholders and the public, as needed.

Front-line managers might need to know about a current investigation or they might not. Most phishing attempts will force the issue, spamming the same illegitimate email message across the entire domain, which will force the need to send a company-wide email. Front-line managers should be concerned with their team(s) and their customers in the following ways:
Manage Teams: Front-line managers should understand the situation well enough to give their team marching orders. For example, should their team members continue working? Should they disconnect from Wi-Fi? Should they be turning off their machines? The front-line manager should have these answers readily available.
Manage Customers: If the incident was a phishing attempt, the entire address book of the user could have been contacted and contact information may be vulnerable. Front-line managers should have a template email in place to send out in case of security events.

Perfect Storm for Ransomware

The massive increase in people working from home has opened up a whole new world of ransomware victims for a few different reasons. Work from home employees are often using their own devices, meaning the cybersecurity department has no view into the applications, configurations, data or any other element that might help circumvent an attack.

Even if cybersecurity pros at a given company have practices in place for pushing out patches and upgrades to work-from-home devices, the sheer volume of traffic going through virtual private networks (VPNs) has positioned businesses to prioritize other things over rolling out patches critical to maintaining enterprise-grade security.

And these same users whose computers are not appropriately secured are no longer protected by perimeter security that would knock out obvious ransomware emails or block traffic to sketchy websites. The most successful criminals always go with what’s easiest first, and with a world of panicked people computing from insecure environments, making money via ransomware suddenly got way easier. In other words, more unprotected endpoints means more opportunities.

Cloud Migration Mistakes for Successful Deployment

Giving in to Over-customization: To maximize efficiency, it is always better to customize the Cloud according to business-specific requirements. An inflexible cloud environment and over-customization to host the migration projects lead to a hazardous situation for the business processes. As the migrating teams form custom security policies, service configurations, and management processes to address a specific domain, the entire organization may not be compatible and heading towards an array of cloud management problems.
Getting the Wrong Idea About the Migration Process: Lack of professional understanding about application mapping, refactoring, re-hosting, cloud provisioning to match the workloads, and other crucial migration processes leads to deployment failure. A professional workforce to assist in the entire migration process ensures error-free deployment.
Ignoring the Compliance & Security Needs: Cloud migration must be in accordance to the compliance regulations defined by HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act), FIS Management, and other similar acts to avoid any legal issues and to guarantee the safety of your business data and applications. Also, businesses generally have insufficiency planning for security measures by assuming the Cloud to be foolproof. It is easy to forget that data encryption is the responsibility of the businesses migrating to the Cloud.
Choosing the Technology: Choosing the technology stack plays an important role as the right technology contributes to minimizing the avoidable costs and improving the platform efficiency.

What Makes a Good CompTIA Ambassador?

Ambassadors typically sign on to promote a brand because they love it. The CompTIA Rewards program is no different. For example, Jain has earned Cisco IT Essentials and CompTIA A+ certifications and plans to pursue CompTIA Network+ next.

She values her CompTIA certifications because they have provided a means to gain in-depth knowledge while adding credibility to her portfolio.

“My CompTIA certifications demonstrate that I am agile as a newcomer to the industry with no formal IT education,” Jain said. “It’s a brand stamp that got me noticed and has validated my skills to hiring managers.”

There isn’t one – really. Jain said CompTIA Rewards is a win-win for everyone involved. You, the ambassador, get rewarded for sharing, and the people you share with gain access to a plethora of resources to help them skill up and train for a better job.

And while the rewards themselves are a huge benefit, Jain said there’s more to her story.

“This has given me the confidence to be entrepreneurial without any monetary investment. I’ve earned $650 in gift cards so far, and I’ve been able to gift some of them to my family and friends,” she said.

TLS Certificates Using ACM

When it comes to provisioning certificates, you have two options.
The first option, Import Certificate, obtains the domain(s) from the certificate. This certificate is usually your own, meaning you already gave it a domain name.
The second option, Request Certificate, obtains a public certificate from Amazon. In this case, you provide a fully qualified domain name of the website you want to protect. If you want to provide a wildcard certificate that will cover multiple pages within the same domain, use an asterisk instead of ‘www’ in the site’s full domain name.

For our example, we will be requesting, provisioning, and deploying certificates for a site called samplesite.com. Since we want to secure both the top-level domain and higher-level subdomains it contains.

Once you have provided the domain names, click on Review and Request. This sends you to a confirmation page displaying the names of sites you want to secure. If any of these does not match your intentions, click on the previous button. If your review seems perfect, you can click on Confirm and Request.

CompTIA Certification Can Be Transformative

In 1995, I was in my second year of teaching High School English to a group of “alternative” kids at an “alternative” high school. “Alternative” was a nice way of saying “troubled” as these were the kids who had been previously tossed out of their original high schools and were now on a perilous path, which in many cases, led to the street and in some cases to jail.
I loved my job—and more importantly, I loved helping the kids whose only semblance of family was found at our school, but at the end of my second year, I found out that the school district budget had been cut and all non-tenured teachers would be RIF’d. “RIF” was not an acronym I was familiar with, and someone had to tell me what it meant “Reduction in Force.” And so, I would have to start looking at other school districts for work.

At that point, I had to make a really tough decision: either continue in education or jump ship and start fresh in the booming Information Technology industry. After doing some research—and some soul-searching—it was obvious that IT is where I wanted to be. Windows 95 had just been introduced, and the PC-boom was about to explode. I had a natural love of technology, and I was fascinated to find out where a career in IT might take me.

It turned out my first stop was to get trained. Today at New Horizons, we train thousands of students every year that find themselves in a situation very similar to the one I was in over 18 years ago. That’s not surprising—people change careers or start new ones all of the time. What is surprising though is that the first step that many of our students take is the same one that I took in 1996—earning a CompTIA certification.

First established in 1982 as the Association of Better Computer Dealers, CompTIA has provided career-changers and career-enhancers an avenue to learn the fundamental skills necessary to be successful in the IT industry.

What Is a Multi-Vendor Environment?

A multi-vendor environment refers to a computer network that supports tools from more than one manufacturer, vendor or provider. This is often considered to be a hybrid approach where companies add applications and platforms to their environment to solve for particular business problems.

For example, a company may choose a cloud service to gather data from many different origins. A computer networking professional would then be asked to make sure that the cloud implementation is using networking resources properly because the cloud service and the networking resources come from different vendors.

Another example could include upgrading computer networking components. If a network switch is not adequate and needs an upgrade, networking professionals will be asked to provide information about where the bottleneck is and how to optimize routing and switching. If the vendor of the existing equipment does not offer the right solution, the networking pro may choose something from a different vendor.

The cost of CISSP certification varies from location to location as individuals take this exam across the globe, but the prices in the US are currently $699. If you are unable to appear in the exam, you will have to pay $100 in order to file for cancellation.

The certification’s validity is time-bound and an individual has to re-certify after every three years. However, if the individual has been paying the $35 annual maintenance fee as well as gaining 40 CPE credit hours each year, the re-certification won’t involve appearing in the exam once again.

But if the individual doesn’t meet these requirements, it will have to definitely re-appear in the exam as per the course contents of that time.

interpersonal communication skills

We had an increased reliance on online collaboration tools and that became extremely important for communicating information to people,” she says. “As people went home, they asked for support on consumer products, home printers, WiFi and cable providers, and it challenged our ability to troubleshoot, so we really had to share knowledge more creatively.”

She sees business needs for IT Service Management and Unified Communications ramping up dramatically as IT departments struggle with a deluge of tickets, a view shared by Matt Hackney, regional vice president for the New York region at the staffing firm, Robert Half Technology.

“There’s just more tickets because there’s more remote work, which means people require additional help desk and desktop support,” Hackney says. “That provides opportunities for ITSM professions from the ground floor all the way up through management across multiple professional backgrounds.”

He points out perspective employers are wanting to know more about prospective employees’ skill sets working in remote environments as well as their interpersonal communication skills.

Career Path to Network Administration

CompTIA A+ courses enable IT professionals to acquire basic but vital networking skills. To remain competitive in the market, it is necessary for you to train your team with the required skills and get them certified. This will help you to eliminate any chances of developing a skills gap in the future.
Network administration is an indispensable role involving a wide range of vital tasks necessary for networks to run flawlessly and efficiently. Effective network administration is crucial and is the only key to maintaining small to complex network operations for smooth functioning in an organization.
A network administrator is accountable for:
Designing, installing, and evaluating the network
Executing and administering regular backups
Creating accurate technical documentation, including network diagrams, cabling documents, and much more
Provisioning the rigorous authentication for network resource access by users
Provisioning the assistance for troubleshooting
Administering the network security and intrusion detection
Considering network administration as a career option is an excellent choice for IT aspirants who are seeking a rewarding and profitable, yet challenging role. Prospective network administrators must have the technical knowledge to install, support, and manage networks for the continuous flow of information. Research conducted by the Bureau of Labor Statistics reveals that the network and systems administration domain is accelerating at an annual growth rate of 8%, which is higher than other IT careers. The field is projected to grow at the same pace through 2024. However, there is a huge talent gap in this domain as the number of well-qualified technicians entering this role fail to address the demand for professionals equipped with adequate proficiencies. This dispenses enormous career opportunities for people with the vital technical skills acquired through professional training.

What makes the CISSP designation so valuable?

The (ISC)² calls CISSP the most-esteemed cyber security certification within the profession on a worldwide scale, and there’s little doubt about its widespread recognition in a very type of information security management role. This kind of industry-wide acceptance is efficacious for everybody who holds the designation. That’s very true for those seeking new roles in other regions of the U.S. and foreign countries. Regardless of where a cyber security management position is predicated, all competent employers will recognize the added value of a candidate with CISSP certification.

What foundation is this high level of recognition for CISSP built upon? The twin emphasis on management and on-the-ground implementation is one key component. Certification holders demonstrate knowledge of the cyber security effort from a leadership perspective, including in-depth concepts and functional understanding of a way to effectively spearhead a robust strategy and oversee the method as it’s delegated across a team or department. There’s also attention to practical skills and the technical processes needed to form a cyber security strategy effective on the bottom level. Basically, a CISSP-certified professional can make a full proof cyber security plan from initial conception through the event and installation phases, and so monitor, adjust, and improve as necessary.

Promote Employee Resource Groups

Providers, vendors and distributors can foster workplace inclusion by promoting the development of Employee Resource Groups (ERGs). ERGs are employee-driven communities that create networking, mentoring and business development opportunities for underrepresented groups within a company.

Pound recommended that channel organizations “build a culture around celebrating differences and the vibrancy this brings to your business.”

Unconscious biases—biases about a person or groups of people that unconsciously affect our understanding, decision making and actions—are pervasive in the workplace and can thwart a company’s ability to attract and maintain diverse pools of talent.

Pound encouraged channel organizations to hire training experts to develop awareness of unconscious bias and disrupt it, “Bring people into your company to talk to staff about what bias looks like, experiences of it, what to avoid, how to promote equity and be inclusive. And do it regularly, not just as a one off.”

Eliminating unconscious bias from talent recruitment requires a multipronged approach:
Remove identifying information—names, home addresses and dates—from received résumés
Ask all candidates the same questions
Have candidates interview with different people

Conversations at ChannelCON

CompTIA’s event always leads to terrific conversations, and I had the pleasure of sitting on a panel to talk about “What’s Next for the Channel” with Tim Basa, VP Sales and Operations at AppSmart, and Juan Fernandez, VP Managed IT Services at ImageNet Consulting. You can watch that session here

The primary conclusion to our lively discussion was that the channel has an opportunity to innovate ... and we are answering the call. We all saw how the entire world shifted to a remote work model in what felt like an instant. Some companies were well-positioned to make that transition, but many were not. So if there were such a thing as a modern superhero, it would be “your friendly, neighborhood” managed services provider.

The MSP Channel was poised perfectly to move workers from their offices to their homes, and they did it in record time. In many cases, MSPs worked selflessly 24x7 to get their clients safe and working from home.
Surviving financial hardships in the channel

We also talked a bit about what the last recession looked like for the channel, the lessons we learned, and how that might help predict what’s going to happen today. While we did see some of our channel brethren shut down, we also saw an influx of new channel partners who were ready, willing, and able to approach problems in a new and different way.

That was the key to success in the last recession and it just may well be the key to success today; being willing to change and to think and do differently is key to long term survival of any business.

AN IDEA IS POTENTIALLY A VIABLE INNOVATION

In order to find great innovation, we need lots of ideas. However, not all ideas are great candidates for bringing to market. We must look at our ideas to determine their viability. A recent ACNielson study found that as many as 90% of all new products and services fail within the first two years. This appalling statistic often means customers didn’t really want those products or services in the first place. This result often happens because we jump ahead and focus on our approach (the solution itself and how we’re going to bring it to market) before we thoughtfully consider our customer and market needs. To avoid this pitfall, we must vet the idea before we invest in funding, designing, or building any new product or service. “Build it and they will come” is not the best approach here, despite Kevin Costner’s protests.

When approached with a good idea, the first question we need to answer is “Do we truly understand our customer, and is this something they care about?” We must spend time talking with and observing our customers, face-to-face as much as possible, to truly understand their needs and make sure there is a legitimate, unmet problem to be solved.

As a result, it’s vital that we help our teams and organizations understand that innovation is only viable if it fulfills an unmet need. To that end, innovation shouldn’t be limited to an organization’s R&D or Innovation teams. Some of the best ideas for innovation will come from our first-tier workers who regularly interface with our customers. They see the struggles, frustrations, and unsolved needs that customers deal with, and we need to make sure we have mechanisms in place to capture, nurture, and act on these ideas.

Understanding CWSP Certification

The CWSP certification is designed to validate one’s skills in securing enterprise Wi-Fi networks. CWSP-certified professionals are able to protect wireless networks from hackers, regardless of which brand of equipment is used in the organization.

You can only obtain CWSP after undergoing testing for CWNA (Certified Wireless Network Administrator). CWNA serves as the foundation level certification process for Wi-Fi networks. It tests one’s ability to identify, install, and administer enterprise Wi-Fi connections.

CWSP is a step up from CWNA because it validates your ability to secure Wi-Fi connections at the corporate level. The test is a 60-question multiple choice exam that’s about 90 minutes in length.

CWSP certification is beneficial for more than just network security. It also ensures that your IT personnel are able to create focused, objective, and reliable networks to fuel your daily operations. Whether your business is in manufacturing, retail, or finance, secure Wi-Fi connections are necessary for many different applications.

The CWSP certificate is proof that your team has undergone network security training, collaboration with other industry professionals, and experience in handling enterprise networks and equipment (under the CWNA certification).

Education Requirements for Cybersecurity Jobs

Many cybersecurity jobs require formal training and education. CyberSeek breaks down education requirements and shows the percentage of online job listings requiring either less than a bachelor's degree, a bachelor's degree or a graduate degree.

For example, cybersecurity specialist is a term used to categorize entry-level cybersecurity jobs or jobs that perform cybersecurity tasks in addition to other IT tasks, such as tech support or networking. Job titles may include IT specialist information security or IT security specialist. The job postings for this role don’t require as much education as others – 22% of cybersecurity specialist postings require less than a bachelor’s degree, which is higher than more advanced job titles.

In contrast, a cybersecurity engineer is on the advanced-level career track, so if you’re interested in a career as such, you should know that 88% of job openings require higher education. In fact, 80% of cybersecurity engineer postings require a bachelor’s degree and 9% require a graduate degree.

Multi-Factor Authentication

One of the largest problems with traditional user ID and password login is the need to maintain a password database. Whether encrypted or not, if the database is captured it provides an attacker with a source to verify his guesses at speeds limited only by his hardware resources. Given enough time, a captured password database will fall.

As processing speeds of CPUs have increased, brute force attacks have become a real threat. Further developments like GPGPU password cracking, rainbow tables and now the Quantum computers have provided greater advantages for the attackers. GPGPU cracking, for example, can produce more than 500,000,000 passwords per second, even on lower end gaming hardware. Depending on the particular software, rainbow tables can be used to crack 14-character alphanumeric passwords in about 160 seconds. Recently, a paper released by Google’s researchers that was briefly posted on a Nasa’s website before being removed, claimed that their processor was able to perform a calculation in three minutes and 20 seconds that would take today’s most advanced classical computer, known as Summit, approximately 10,000 years. With these capabilities, a password database alone doesn’t stand a chance against such methods when it is a real target of interest.

In the past, MFA systems typically relied upon two-factor authentication. Increasingly, vendors are using the label “multifactor” to describe any authentication scheme that requires more than one identity credential.
Authentication factors

An authentication factor is a category of credential used for identity verification. For MFA, each additional factor is intended to increase the assurance that an entity involved in some kind of communication or requesting access to some system is who, or what, they are declared to be. The five most common categories are often described as something you know (the knowledge factor), something you have (the possession factor), something you are (the inherence factor), somewhere you are (location factor) and something you do (Time factors).

Changing Perspective on Remote IT Jobs

The cloud hasn’t just impacted how we do business, it’s also had a huge influence on our ability to work from a remote physical location. The COVID-19 pandemic was an eye opener for many businesses and it was surprising to see just how many IT workers could successfully do their jobs from home.

Stetson Blake, founder of Helios IT Services, knows the challenges of doing remote IT work and has seen many companies make the shift to hiring remote IT workers.

“Companies are now looking around and realizing they don’t need all those bodies in a physical space,” Blake said. “You can accomplish just as much without the same bills that come with an office building.”
Check Out Job Boards Specific to Remote Working.

Blake found many opportunities through remote working job boards. He recommended sites such as Stack Overflow, Indeed, Hacker News and Remoteok.io, among others.

Hempel recommended LinkedIn for the job search. She used it primarily because it’s easy to filter by job role and connect with other IT pros. And CompTIA has recently partnered with ZipRecruiter, so you can get job alerts about opportunities that meet your needs.

What Is GRC

This three-part division makes quite a bit of sense, and is a natural part of how cybersecurity continues to morph and change as it works its way through all divisions of an organization. CompTIA’s certification offerings have reflected this growing trend for some time.

For example, the CompTIA Security+ (SY0-601) exam (live in November 2020) very strongly reflects this new three-part cybersecurity trifecta, as you might expect. If you download the objectives for this new exam, you’ll see that there’s an entirely new domain called Governance, Risk and Compliance (GRC).

Even though the CompTIA Security+ 601 exam has streamlined several topics found throughout the 501 exam, this entirely new domain. It’s good to see that it reflects the growing interest in governance and privacy. Yes, privacy.

Those laws can include:
The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)
The California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA)

But governance and compliance don’t stop there. You’ll need to learn your cybersecurity frameworks, such as the Lockheed-Martin Cyber Kill Chain, the MITRE ATT&CK model and the Diamond model. These frameworks are helpful to cybersecurity tacticians and managers alike.

How Many Open Cybersecurity Jobs

Here are some highlights:

The top five states with the most cybersecurity openings are California (67,915), Virginia (54,432), Texas (46,279), New York (24,431), and Florida (23,629). The five states with the fewest cybersecurity openings are Wyoming (340), Vermont (431), North Dakota (622), Montana (624), and South Dakota (660).
What Does the Future Look Like?

Now, a large quantity of jobs is one thing. But is the amount shrinking or growing?

The cybersecurity growth is undeniable.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average growth rate across all occupations is 5%. For Information Security Analysts, it’s an eye-popping 32%!

The numbers are similarly good for other cyber roles. Computer and Information Systems Managers, for instance, have a projected growth rate of 11%. For both Computer Systems Analysts and Database Administrators, it’s 9% — almost double the overall average.

With factors like automation and migration, work was already changing before. Throw in a global pandemic and the need for remote employment, and the landscape becomes that much more complicated.

But cybersecurity is one industry you can count on to be there. And in uncertain times, there’s a lot to be said for that.

Whether you’re working for the DoD, or just working with a company that regularly contracts with the DoD like Raytheon, Booz Allen Hamilton, Northrop Grumman, etc., you will need these certifications to operate at different levels. The table above shows what certifications are required for such work.

This creates a huge opportunity for those who get certified, because companies who work with the DoD are always in need of certified professionals to work on their contracts. Thinking about going into DoD work, but not sure which certification is right for you? Luckily, we wrote a blog about that.

When it comes to an overall company’s well-being, certifications are the gift that keeps on giving. Studies from CompTIA, Microsoft, IDC, and Novell have confirmed wide-ranging benefits for a company on the whole.

Organizations that invest in certifications for their employees are rewarded with happier and more productive workers who want to stay longer. Not only do they bring a brand new skill set to the table, they’re grateful, excited, and engaged because their company showed faith in them.

CompTIA exam Determining the correct answer

CompTIA questions are not always the “one and only correct answer in the universe”. Because the questions are more subtle than that, they mostly require the “Best Answer” to be picked. The “Best Answer” is arrived to in part by looking at the context of the question and in part by deduction. The context of the question can include the scenario presented in the question text or the available distractors or both. In any case, what you believe is a wrong answer can still be a “best answer” given the alternatives. In an MCSA question each response you can disregard increases your chances of being correct by 25%! It is completely reasonable to arrive at the correct response by deductive reasoning.

Here is a good example. The question is:

“On the backside of a notebook, you generally see two connectors, one electrical for power and one non-electrical for security. Which of the choices best describes these two connections?“ and the available responses are:

NIC

HDMI

Cable lock

USB port

12vDC jack

Here is how you apply deductive reasoning to determine the two correct answers:

First, we need to know what will satisfy the question. Here there are two ports on the device one is for power. Check the answers and the only one relative to power is 12v DC jack. Now you have one of your two answers since none of the others reference power at all. You’ll see other voltages in the field but remember that the world you are in right here only has one listing a power rating and so it is your “BEST” choice. Now to Security, we want to know which choice has no electrical properties and provides security. On the list you can see a NIC, HDMI, and a USB port. All of those use some form of electrical energy, so they are out. We’ve used the 12v answer and we are left with the Cable lock which is correct because it is a security component.
